Kushinagar is a significant Buddhist pilgrimage site in India’s Uttar Pradesh state. It holds great importance in Buddhism because it is believed to be where Lord Buddha passed away and attained Parinirvana (final nirvana) after enlightenment. It is located 53 kilometres east of Gorakhpur on National Highway 27.
The Mahaparinirvana Temple is the most important landmark in Kushinagar. It is a large temple complex that houses a 6.10 meter (20.0 ft) long reclining statue of Buddha. The statue is sandstone and is believed to have been carved in the 5th century CE.
Kushinagar is also home to several other Buddhist temples and monasteries, including the Ramabhar Stupa, Japanese Temple, the Chinese Temple, and the Thai Temple.
