Sarnath is a town in the Varanasi district of Uttar Pradesh, India. It is located 10 kilometres (6.2 miles) northeast of Varanasi. Sarnath is one of the most important Buddhist pilgrimage sites in the world.
It is believed that after attaining enlightenment at Bodh Gaya, Gautama Buddha came to Sarnath and delivered his first sermon, the Dharmachakra Pravartana, to his five former companions. This sermon is considered to be the beginning of Buddhism as a religion.
